ASCHA Update - Week of August 11, 2025
National Role and Influence
Last week, ASCHA’s Executive Director participated in two national-level meetings. These meetings occur on a regular schedule and provide a conduit for Albertan perspectives to enter federal advocacy and policy discussions on seniors housing and affordable housing. Irene Martin-Lindsay and Steve Vallevand are ASCHA’s representatives on the Board of the Canadian Senior Living Association (CSLA). CSLA is currently working on a pre-budget submission that proposes to elevate seniors living across Canada, and advocates for incentivizing seniors prioritizing their social wellbeing and quality of life by moving into the right settings for their lifestyle needs and supports. CSLA is also preparing for its first Annual General Meeting in September and there was much discussion on this. ASCHA also participated as a member of the Canadian Alliance of Non-Profit Housing Associations (CANPHA). CANPHA is working on influencing and providing input from a provider’s perspective on the federal government’s Build Canada Homes plan. We discussed how we can double the supply of community housing. ASCHA’s active involvement and knowledge of what is happening across Canada provides a significant value-add for our members and allows an Albertan voice at the tables.
Healthcare Excellence Canada Report: Seven Elements for Successful Community Engagement in the Care of Older Adults
Improving care and support for older adults with diverse health and social needs starts with meaningful engagement. Healthcare Excellence Canada recently released a report titled Seven Elements for Successful Community Engagement in the Care of Older Adults. This resource offers strategies for inclusive engagement, leveraging community strengths to shape solutions that reflect older adults’ needs, experiences, and support long-term impact. This resource is for health and social service professionals (including long-term care administrators, community health workers, and policy makers), community organizations and groups (e.g.: nonprofits, senior centres, and grassroots initiatives), and older adults, caregivers and community leaders.
ASCHA Sector Fact Sheets
ASCHA has developed a series of Sector Fact Sheets to help various audiences better understand the different types of housing our members offer – across the full continuum of community and seniors housing options. Our Fact Sheets provide an overview of housing types, their role in the continuum, their benefits, and key advocacy points. We hope you will find these useful for your own public awareness and advocacy efforts.
Our Meeting Albertans’ Needs Across the Housing Spectrum Fact Sheet provides a high-level overview of all housing types and serves as a basis for specific housing program fact sheets that are currently under development.
Our Alberta Seniors Lodge Program Fact Sheet is the first of many in the series.
Our Seniors Housing Options in Alberta Fact Sheet provides a succinct overview of the housing options available to seniors in the province.
You can find our fact sheets in the Advocacy section of our website under “Current Initiatives.”
More tools specifically for members are published in our Members-Only Area.
